The Collect

Seventh Sunday of Easter: The Sunday after Ascension Day
O God, the King of glory, you have exalted thine only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to thy kingdom in heaven: We beseech thee, leave us not comfortless, but send us thine Holy Ghost to comfort us, and exalt us to the same place where our Savior Christ is gone before; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen

The Collect

Fifth Sunday of Easter
Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know thy Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

¹Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. ²Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, ³explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ." ⁴And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas. ⁵But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. ⁶But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, "These who have turned the world upside down have come here too. ⁷Jason has harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king-Jesus." ⁸And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things. ⁹So when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go. ¹⁰Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. Fourth Sunday of Easter
O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of thy people; Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he doth lead; who, with thee and the Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

“Oh Yes, He Did Rise!”

A devout bishop was preaching his Easter sermon. He began by saying, “In our repeating the Apostles’ Creed we say, ‘The third day He rose again from the dead,’ but do we know that He really did?” There was, of course, no doubt in the good bishop’s mind that the Resurrection was true, but he wanted to ask the question in an attention-compelling way. He succeeded.

Instantly a little boy arose in the congregation and cried out, “Oh yes, sir, He did rise from the dead!”

So, Easter is a day of faith and of assurance. The death of Jesus was not God’s final word. The final, conclusive, ever-new word is that Jesus Christ truly rose from the dead by the mighty power of God!

On Easter morning the tomb was found to be empty. The friends of Jesus could not have stolen His body, for they were too weak and discouraged, many of them having fled. The enemies of Jesus had no reason to remove His body. For them, a trouble-maker was out of the way. His body was where they wanted it to be, safe and secure, away from any more interference. For Pilate, a potential rabble-rouser was silenced. For the Jewish authorities, a “blasphemer” was properly punished.

There were at least a dozen post-Resurrection appearances of the Risen Christ, both to groups and to individuals.

The inescapable conclusion is that Christ arose. He lives today in our hearts and in the world.

My Church lives because its origin is Divinely blessed. By my Lenten and Easter Offering, and in other ways, I shall show my living loyalty.

The Thirst for God

Lenten Meditations

One of the loveliest passages in the Psalms is in the Forty-second: “As a doe longs for running streams, so longs my soul for You, my God. My soul thirsts for God, the God of Life” (1,2 The Jerusalem Bible)

In the catacombs of St. Calixtus outside ancient Rome, there are often found sketches of a deer. Symbolically the worshipers expressed their thirst for the Living God.

Well may we be inspired by the early Church Fathers. Augustine wrote, “ O my God, Thou art my life, my joy, my holy, dear delight!”

Ignatius, being martyred, said to his tormentors, “You may cut my heart into a thousand pieces. On every one you will find in letters of gold the dear name of Jesus!”

There is a legend that Thomas Aquinas received a vision of Christ who said, “Thomas, you have written very well about Me. What would you like as a reward?” Replied the devout master-theologian, “No other gift than Thyself, O Lord!”

St. Theresa, a mother in God, dreamt of an angel who in one hand held a curtain. In the other was a cup of water. “What do these things mean?” asked Theresa. Replied the angel, “With the curtain I hide the sight of heaven, and with the water I dampen the fires of hell. God wants His children to love Him for Himself alone, and not for hope of heavenly reward or fear of hell.”

That puts it neatly, doesn’t it? Not what we get, but what we give is of most importance.

All through Lent we have been thinking deeply and spiritually. Also we show our loyalty to our Church as we make our Lenten Self-Denial Offerings.
