Lectionary: 1979 | Collect & Preface: Traditional

The Collect

Proper 14
Grant to us, Lord, we beseech thee, the spirit to think and do always such things as are right, that we, who cannot exist without thee, may by thee be enabled to live according to thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
Preface of the Lord's Day

Old Testament Reading

Jonah 2:1-9
1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish, 2 saying, "I called to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and thou didst hear my voice. 3 For thou didst cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood was round about me; all thy waves and thy billows passed over me. 4 Then I said, `I am cast out from thy presence; how shall I again look upon thy holy temple?' 5 The waters closed in over me, the deep was round about me; weeds were wrapped about my head 6 at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me for ever; yet thou didst bring up my life from the Pit, O LORD my God. 7 When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to thee, into thy holy temple. 8 Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their true loyalty. 9 But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to thee; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to the LORD!"

Psalm

Psalm 29
Afferte Domino
1Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, *
     ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
2Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his Name; *
     worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
3The voice of the LORD is upon the waters;
     the God of glory thunders; *
     the LORD is upon the mighty waters.
4The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice; *
     the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendour.
5The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees; *
     the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon;
6He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, *
     and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.
7The voice of the LORD splits the flames of fire;
     the voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; *
     the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
8The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe *
     and strips the forests bare.
9And in the temple of the LORD *
     all are crying, "Glory!"
10The LORD sits enthroned above the flood; *
     the LORD sits enthroned as King for evermore.
11The LORD shall give strength to his people; *
     the LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace.

New Testament Reading

Romans 9:1-5
1 I am speaking the truth in Christ, I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit, 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen by race. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; 5 to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ. God who is over all be blessed for ever. Amen.

Gospel Reading

Matthew 14:22-33
22 Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. 27 But immediately he spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear." 28 And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." 29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; 30 but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
