Proper 28
The Collect
Proper 28Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that, by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
Preface of the Lord's Day
Old Testament Reading
Malachi 3:13-4:23:13 " Your words have been harsh against Me," Says the LORD, " Yet you say, ' What have we spoken against You?' 14 You have said, ' It is useless to serve God; What profit is it that we have kept His ordinance, And that we have walked as mourners Before the LORD of hosts? 15 So now we call the proud blessed, For those who do wickedness are raised up; They even tempt God and go free.'" 16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, And the LORD listened and heard them; So a book of remembrance was written before Him For those who fear the LORD And who meditate on His name. 17 " They shall be Mine," says the LORD of hosts, " On the day that I make them My jewels. And I will spare them As a man spares his own son who serves him." 18 Then you shall again discern Between the righteous and the wicked, Between one who serves God And one who does not serve Him.4:1 "For behold, the day is coming, Burning like an oven, And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up," Says the LORD of hosts, " That will leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings; And you shall go out And grow fat like stall-fed calves. -- NKJV - AND -
Malachi 4:5-6
5Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. 6And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse." -- NKJV
Psalm
Psalm 98Cantate Domino 1Sing to the LORD a new song, * for he has done marvelous things. 2With his right hand and his holy arm * has he won for himself the victory. 3The LORD has made known his victory; * his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. 4He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, * and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 5Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands; * lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. 6Sing to the LORD with the harp, * with the harp and the voice of song. 7With trumpets and the sound of the horn * shout with joy before the King, the LORD. 8Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, * the lands and those who dwell therein. 9Let the rivers clap their hands, * and let the hills ring out with joy before the LORD, when he comes to judge the earth. 10In righteousness shall he judge the world * and the peoples with equity. 11Light has sprung up for the righteous, * and joyful gladness for those who are truehearted. 12Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous, * and give thanks to his holy Name.- OR -
Psalm 98:5-10
5Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands; * lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. 6Sing to the LORD with the harp, * with the harp and the voice of song. 7With trumpets and the sound of the horn * shout with joy before the King, the LORD. 8Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, * the lands and those who dwell therein. 9Let the rivers clap their hands, * and let the hills ring out with joy before the LORD, when he comes to judge the earth. 10In righteousness shall he judge the world * and the peoples with equity.
New Testament Reading
2 Thessalonians 3:6-136But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. 7For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; 8nor did we eat anyone's bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, 9not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us. 10For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 11For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. 12Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread. 13But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good. -- NKJV
Gospel Reading
Luke 21:5-195Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said, 6"These things which you see-the days will come in which not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down." 7So they asked Him, saying, "Teacher, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?" 8And He said: "Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am He,' and, 'The time has drawn near.' Therefore do not go after them. 9But when you hear of wars and commotions, do not be terrified; for these things must come to pass first, but the end will not come immediately." 10Then He said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. 12But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and rulers for My name's sake. 13But it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony. 14Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer; 15for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist. 16You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. 17And you will be hated by all for My name's sake. 18But not a hair of your head shall be lost. 19By your patience possess your souls. -- NKJV
